"was the Panther of E. Barkmann an early, medium or late version, any photos ?
thanks Quote Share Chris Ballance Use Early Ausf G kit without Zimmerit but with a crew compartment heater back fitted 9:40 AM - Dec 13, 2003 #2 I assume you are asking which Panther Ausf G kit to build, a "late G" or a "early G" kit? I did a little digging and people have been asking questions about Barkmann's BoB Panther 401 in this DG since October 2000. Looking through the threads, I don't see where anyone has ever seen a photo of the 401.
The only picture I have seen of Barkmann's 401 is the from a painting by David Pentland found here:
http://www.panzer-prints.com/barkmann.htm
Pentland shows it without the "late G" chin gun mantlet. The picture of the painting is small and only shows the front of the vehicle, but the vehicle clearly did not have zimmerit and its unlikely it was one of the small batch of vehicles with steel tyred roadwheels built in Sept 44.
I don't know what sources Pentland had for his painting, I am assuming he based is work in part on the 2nd SS Panzer Panther currently on display in Grandmenil, Belgium (just down the road from Manhay, 407 is a incomplete vehicle wreck with many parts missing and post war paint job). This vehicle does not have the "late G" chin gun mantlet or the Flammvernichter exhaust mufflers, but does have the "late G" Kampfraumhelzung crew compartment heater on the rear deck. It is important to note that 407 does have the "early G" rear idler.
Pictures of 2nd SS Panther 407 located in Grandenil can be seen at the following:
http://www.jagdtiger.de/index2.htm
http://ardencim.free.fr/page31.html
From the pictures of 407, I believe that 401 had the crew compartment heater back fitted to the vehicle like as Jentz has noted about other vehicles built in late Sept-October 1944.
Summing up my general understanding of the tamiya kits available (others with have to check me here on details and no experience with DML)
-early G kits have round gun mantlet, no crew heater, early idler and no exhaust mufflers.
-late G kits have chin gun mantlet, crew compartment heater, late production self cleaning idler, and exhaust mufflers
So in my option, if you want to build Barkmann's 401, based on the wreck of 407 and Pentland's painting then you build a "early G" kit with a scratch built crew compartment heater or use parts from the rear deck of the "late G" kit if you have access to them. "
